Australia’s rooftop solar industry has experienced extraordinary growth, but recent figures show that the pace of new installations has started to soften. Around 269,000 small-scale solar systems were installed during 2025, compared with approximately 319,000 in 2024. However, the Clean Energy Regulator noted that some installer capacity shifted from rooftop solar to the rapidly growing battery market.
So, is the solar boom over? Not exactly. The market is moving beyond standalone rooftop panels towards complete energy systems that combine solar generation, battery storage, monitoring and smarter energy management.
Have Solar Rebates Ended?
The main national incentive for rooftop solar is still available. The Australian Government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme reduces the upfront cost of eligible residential and business solar installations through small-scale technology certificates.
Battery incentives are also creating new opportunities. Through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, eligible households, businesses and community organisations can receive a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of installing an eligible small-scale battery system.
Why Solar and Battery Training Still Matters
For licensed electricians, the future of the industry is no longer limited to installing panels. Customers increasingly require professionals who can design and install solar systems, integrate batteries, work with inverters and understand how different technologies operate together.
This shift makes solar and battery training a valuable upskilling option. Electricians who can provide complete renewable-energy solutions may be better positioned to take advantage of the industry’s next phase.
The solar boom may be changing, but Australia’s transition towards renewable energy, storage and smarter homes is continuing.
