The students of the MEM31922 Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication Trade are required to attend 1 day per week for 114 weeks. During one day per week (from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm) the classroom-based learning and simulated/practical assessments must take place. The students are also required to working in industry while they study.

Duration
Total duration for MEM31922 – Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade is 1880 hours + workplace hours of approximately 2700 hours over 114 weeks as follows:

• 94 weeks delivery and assessment

• 940 hours scheduled mandatory face-to-face classes
(10 hours per week during term time: theory, tutorial, assessment, practical – classroom and simulated Boilermaker & welder environment)

• 564 hours online learning
(6 hours per week during term time)

• 376 hours self-paced learning and building Third Party Evidence Folder
(4 hours per week during term time)

• 2700 hours approximately of workplace evidence
(24 hours per week during term time and breaks additional to scheduled hours)

• 20 weeks break + 94 weeks training

The volume of learning allocated to a qualification will vary depending on the level of the qualification and the experience and competency of the student. Students must complete the allocated hours for the qualification they are undertaking in order to achieve competency. If the student applies for RPL or Credit Transfer, the volume of learning may be reduced.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices, identify, avoid, or control hazards. Report hazards, incidents, injuries and other work health and safety (WHS) non-conformances following SOPs, and obtain skills in identifying and responding to contingencies, including equipment breakdowns, non-conforming components, safety hazards Inspect and test to verify whether an electrical installation is safe and complies with all requirements.
  • Interpret specifications from drawings, sketches and verbal or written job instructions for welding using manual metal arc welding process to the specified standard, selecting appropriate weld and joint preparation methods, consistently weld a range of materials to the specified standard or equivalent using AC or DC welding machines and electrodes while preventing distortion.
  • Perform geometric development. This includes marking and establishing datum points, calculating allowances for fabrication and assembly, selecting, and using parallel line, radial line and triangulation development methods with minimum material wastage and accurate dimensions.
  • Cleaning and preparing metals and the role of contaminants in welding flaws, while understanding safe welding practices, procedures and use of personal protective equipment, understanding basic metallurgy principles associated with alloys, grades, and purposes of various metals.
  • Manually finish and polish materials, selecting appropriate finishing process, media and equipment to manually finish metal and plastic materials while installing and setting up grinding and polishing devices and equipment.

Applicants must:

  • Have minimum language, literacy, and numeracy skills.
  • Year 12 high school level completed or equivalent.
