Low GWP Refrigerant Training Goes Nationwide with Superior Training Centre

4

As Australia’s HVACR industry continues its transition towards refrigerants with lower environmental impact, Superior Training Centre is expanding access to specialized Low GWP training, with regular two-day programs delivered across the country.

The gradual phase-down of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants is changing the way air conditioning and refrigeration systems are installed, maintained and serviced. As alternative refrigerants become increasingly common, technicians are expected to understand not only their environmental benefits but also the different safety requirements associated with their use.

Many lower GWP alternatives, including A2L and A3 refrigerants, introduce flammability considerations that require appropriate knowledge, equipment and handling procedures.

Recognizing the importance of keeping the existing workforce up to date, STC has developed a national training schedule that brings specialized refrigerant education closer to technicians and employers.

With approximately two intakes scheduled each month, generally across one or two Australian states, the program offers greater opportunities for refrigeration and air conditioning professionals to access nationally recognised training without the need to travel interstate.

The training is delivered over two days, combining theoretical knowledge with practical activities designed to help technicians develop confidence when working with flammable refrigerants.

Participants can undertake three nationally recognised units of competency:

  • UEERA0007 – Apply safety awareness and legal requirements for flammable refrigerants. Covers the identification of hazards, safe handling procedures and regulatory requirements associated with flammable refrigerants.
  • UEERA0084 – Service and repair self-contained flammable refrigerant air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Focuses on the practical skills required to safely diagnose, service and repair applicable systems.
  • UEERA0048 – Install and commission flammable refrigerant air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Addresses safe installation, commissioning and operational checks for systems using flammable refrigerants.

Together, these competencies provide technicians with relevant skills for an industry increasingly adopting alternative refrigerant technologies.

The national delivery approach also responds to a practical challenge for the HVACR workforce. For technicians working outside major training centres, accessing specialised courses can involve significant travel, accommodation expenses and time away from work.

By delivering training in different states throughout the year, STC aims to reduce these barriers and give businesses more opportunities to upskill their teams as new technologies enter the market.

The initiative forms part of STC’s ongoing commitment to supporting professional development within the air conditioning and refrigeration sector, ensuring that experienced tradespeople can continue developing the skills required by a changing industry.

With new sessions scheduled regularly across Australia, technicians and employers are encouraged to explore upcoming locations and available training dates.
