When people think of apprenticeships, they often picture someone finishing Year 10 or Year 12 and moving straight into a trade. That is certainly one pathway, but it is far from the only one.
Apprenticeships can also suit career changers, mature-age workers and people who have spent years in another industry before deciding they want something more practical, stable or hands-on.
Starting later can even bring advantages. Older apprentices often arrive with workplace experience, stronger communication skills and a clearer idea of what they want from their career. They may already understand the importance of reliability, showing up on time and working as part of a team — all qualities employers value.
For some people, the hardest part is simply accepting that changing direction is still possible.
You do not need to have chosen your trade at 17. You do not need to have grown up working with tools. What matters is being willing to learn, build your skills and commit to the pathway.
An apprenticeship allows you to combine structured training with real workplace experience, giving you the opportunity to develop both the technical knowledge and practical confidence needed in the industry.
