This qualification defines the skills and knowledge required of an engineering tradesperson -fabrication within metal, engineering, manufacturing, and associated industries. The qualification has been specifically developed to meet the needs of students to develop skills in the above trade.

The skills associated with this qualification are intended to apply to a wide range of fabrication work, including undertaking metal fabrication, structural steel erection, sheet metal work, welding, blacksmithing and surface finishing.


Total duration for MEM30319 – Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade is 2256 hours over 114 weeks as follows:

  • 94 weeks delivery and assessment
  • 1316 hours scheduled mandatory face to face classes (14 hours per week during term time: theory,  assessment, practical – classroom and simulated Fabrication Trade environment)
  • 564 hours online/self paced  learning (6 hours per week during term time)
  • 376 hours approximately of indirect and supplementary workplace evidence (4 hours per week during term time additional to scheduled hours)
  • 20 weeks break
  • The students should be working in the metal fabrication industry to complete Workplace Evidence hours*. The student builds a portfolio of evidence showing the application of skills learned in the simulated workplace. This assists the student with further employability.

The volume of learning allocated to a qualification will vary depending on the level of the qualification and the experience and competency of the student. Students must complete the allocated hours for the qualification they are undertaking to achieve competency. If the student applies for RPL or Credit Transfer, the volume of learning may be reduced.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices, identify, avoid, or control hazards. Report hazards, incidents, injuries and other work health and safety (WHS) non-conformances following SOPs, and obtain skills in identifying and responding to contingencies, including equipment breakdowns, non-conforming components, safety hazards Inspect and test to verify whether an electrical installation is safe and complies with all requirements.
  • Interpret specifications from drawings, sketches and verbal or written job instructions for welding using manual metal arc welding process to the specified standard, selecting appropriate weld and joint preparation methods, consistently weld a range of materials to the specified standard or equivalent using AC or DC welding machines and electrodes while preventing distortion.
  • Perform geometric development. This includes marking and establishing datum points, calculating allowances for fabrication and assembly, selecting, and using parallel line, radial line and triangulation development methods with minimum material wastage and accurate dimensions.
  • Cleaning and preparing metals and the role of contaminants in welding flaws, while understanding safe welding practices, procedures and use of personal protective equipment, understanding basic metallurgy principles associated with alloys, grades, and purposes of various metals.
  • Manually finish and polish materials, selecting appropriate finishing process, media and equipment to manually finish metal and plastic materials while installing and setting up grinding and polishing devices and equipment.

Applicants must have:

  • Year 12 high school level completed or equivalent.
  • A minimum English language proficiency of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent test recognised by DHA .
  • Interview with STC staff
  • Note: students in this course must have a job in the industry by the completion of term 2 and be under the supervision of a licensed tradesperson.
